This month at Messy Church we heard about Jesus walking on the water, from John 6:16–24. The miracle shows Jesus’ power to save from death, and the judgement which is coming at the last day. We focussed on John 6:40, “Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Our activities included:

Potato Boats

The potato halves were pre-baked. The children scraped out the inside and filled them with what they wanted (cheese, bacon, etc.) and the halves were then warmed in the oven ready for tea.

Float or Sink?

Will it float or sink? We had a big plastic box of water and lots of household items to test. Good fun for younger children especially.

Water Painting

Using watercolour paints, droppers and salt the children painted watery pictures. They managed to crate some interesting effects.

Modelling Clay Boats

We made boats out of modelling clay and tested them to see how many coins they’d hold before sinking.

Stilt Walking

We made and decorated stilts with plastic pots and string. The children loved seeing how far they could walk on them.

Papier-mâché Bowls

We covered a plastic bowl in cling film and then added layers of gluey paper. When it’s dry the cling film allowed the papier-mâché bowl to be peeled off.
