This month we were teaching the account of Jesus feeding the 5000 from John 6. This miracle, like others in John’s Gospel, is a sign pointing to something about Jesus. In this case we focussed on teaching John 6:35, “Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.’” We taught that Jesus is the only one who can truly satisfy by reconnecting us with God.
Here are some of the crafts and activities we did.
Basket Weaving
Jesus’ followers collected the leftover food in baskets. We made baskets by cutting the top off a paper cup leaving the bottom few centimetres, gluing lolly sticks around it and weaving around the top.
Full Bellies
Everyone in the crowd had plenty to eat. We made people with squidgy full bellies by filling balloons with sand or flour.
Foil Fish
We cut fish out of card, covered them in foil and decorated them with pens, stickers, etc.
Catch in the Basket
Jesus’ followers collected 12 baskets of leftover food. We made a basket and ball catcher and challenged people to catch the ball 12 times in a row.
Play Dough Picnic
The children made five loaves and two small fish out of play dough, or they could make their own favourite picnic lunch.
Bread Rolls
We made bread rolls to eat with our tea. We used a simple soda bread recipe so we didn’t have to wait for yeast to rise.
Magnetic Fishing
We used fishing rods with magnets on the end to catch paperclipped fish.
