29 March 2019
This month Messy Church was all about Jesus’ parable of the Wheat and the Weeds (sometimes called the Wheat and the Tares) from Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43. It’s a parable that teaches that Jesus is going to deal with all the evil in the world – but not yet. we still have a chance to trust Jesus and receive salvation.
As you might expect, we did lots of seed-based activities.
Seed Pictures
We provided all sorts of seeds and lentils and the children used them to make pictures.

Friendship Bracelet
We made these bracelets by twisting coloured threads together. They represented the weeds and wheat in the story whose roots were twisted together.

Colour Separating
In the story the servants can’t separate the wheat and the weeds. We drew patterns on filter papers and wetted them to see the colours separate.

Pinecone Bird Feeders
Pinecones contain seeds, and birds like to eat seeds! We made bird feeders by smearing pinecones with lard and then rolling them in birdseed.

Mixed-Up Biscuits
The children made some biscuit mixture and added cocoa powder to half. Then they made mixed up biscuits to cook and eat for tea. They represent the mixed up plants.

Sieving and Separating
We had a mixture of all kinds of things – seeds, sand, pebbles etc. We gave the children loads of sieves, funnels and containers and challenged them to separate out the different things.
