At Messy Church this month we looked at Jesus healing the blind man in John 9. The blind man is made to see but the Pharisees, who claim they can already see, are exposed as blind. They refuse to recognise who Jesus is. The key to the account is found in John 9:35–41. Are we like the blind man who believes in Jesus and worships him, or the Pharisees who stay blind?

Mud Painting

Because Jesus put mud on the blind man’s eyes we painted some pictures using coloured mud. (The mud was actually dyed with food colouring!).

3D Glasses and Pictures

We made 3D glasses with red and blue lenses stuck into a cardboard glasses frame. We then tried drawing pictures with red and blue pens that looked 3D when viewed through the glasses. It was very difficult to draw a picture that looked 3D as the red and blue lines have to be identical, just offset slightly. We had some pictures to trace, which helped get both colours the same.

Light of the World

Jesus told the blind man, “I am the light of the world.” We made candle holders out of modelling clay.

Decorating in the Dark

We tried decorating cakes blindfolded!

Blindfold Game

We played a game where the children were blindfolded and had to try to find the potatoes. You don’t have to use potatoes!
